Restaurant Chain Selects Veryant to Modernize POS Application
isCOBOL technology will bridge the gap between legacy and new applications

March 23, 2009 - Veryant, the COBOL and Java technology innovator, today announced that Donatos Pizzeria LLC, a quick-service pizza restaurant chain with nearly 200 restaurants in six midwestern and southern states, will use the isCOBOL Application Platform Suite (APS) to modernize its COBOL-based point-of-sale (POS) system and move to a Java-based thin client platform.
After conducting several pilot projects with commercial, off-the-shelf software packages that did not adapt easily to the company’s specialized needs, Donatos learned of isCOBOL APS from Veryant. isCOBOL technology protects and extends valuable application assets by blending the optimized, business-oriented nature of COBOL with the openness, portability, and power of the Java platform, without requiring businesses to retrain staff or rewrite code. This was exactly the type of solution the company needed.
Donatos, which started in 1963 with one pizza shop in Ohio, devised a phased strategy to move from its legacy COBOL application to a new Java-based system. Currently, Donatos uses RM/COBOL and runs its POS system on Linux-based servers, with 10-12 terminals per store. First, Donatos will move the application to the isCOBOL platform, and provide ISAM file access to the Java programs. Then, Donatos will migrate its ISAM files to a relational database.
With isCOBOL APS as the bridge between the old and new, Donatos can minimize the impact of the migration by allowing users to continue using a familiar application. It will also provide the flexibility and freedom necessary to execute the transition plan on the company’s timetable. The new system will present a modern GUI interface, but will still preserve the company’s application investments and allow the old and new systems to access the same ISAM data files.
This plan eliminates an abrupt transition and permits deployment of POS terminals that will display the legacy applications alongside the newly designed GUI interface.
