GUI Components
The isCOBOL 2026R2 release adds new GUI components to the isCOBOL GUI library, including a PROGRESS-BAR to provide visual feedback on long-running operations, and TOGGLE buttons to allow users to switch between two states.
New Bean components have been added as standard Java-bean components and provide cross compatibility between ThinClient and WebClient environments. The new bean controls are DropZone, Rating, and SignatureBox.
These new components enhance the user interface capabilities of isCOBOL applications, making them more interactive and user-friendly.
Parametrized Sections
COBOL's Parameterized sections is a language extension that allows program sections to accept arguments and return values, enabling more modular and reusable code.
A parameterized section is invoked like a standard call to an instrisic function, for example in a CALL statement. If the section does not return a value it can be called with a PERFORM statement.
Using parameterized sections avoids the need to create separate subprograms. Arguments and return values are scoped locally, enabling thread-safe code, and parameterized sections can also be used to expose legacy systems through a modern API-like interface.
Microsoft Visual Studio Code Enhancements
The new version of the Veryant Extension for Microsoft Visual Studio Code includes the Outline View that provides an overview of the structure of the COBOL source code, allowing developers to quickly navigate to different sections, paragraphs, and variables within the code.
A new Code Formatter automatically reformats isCOBOL source code according to language-specific formatting rules, improving code readability and maintainability.
Improved Intellisense support with COPY files provides language-aware editing features and code completion, now supporting COPY REPLACING, COPY...OF and COPY SUPPRESS syntaxes.
Other enhancements
isCOBOL code can now use ternary operators, which is a conditional operator in programming that takes three operands and evaluates a result based on a condition.
The INSTANCE OF condition determines whether an object reference is an instance of a class or interface, helping developers prevent runtime exceptions by verifying an object type before casting, to avoid errors like ClassCastException
The RESOURCE syntax used in the TRY statement automatically manages resources that need to be closed explicitly, such as files and database connections
isCOBOL 2026 R2 has a better optimizer when emitting classes, so you can gain additional performance by simply recompiling your code.
Details on these and additional features can be found in the isCOBOL Evolve 2026
